I recently read an interesting article that did what gamer designers do so well. It modeled, with great hilarity, the wost attributes of gamification sins. You can check it out for yourself.
What I like most about this article is that it does not once blast any vitriole at gamification, but rather it parodies gamification and teaches you what not to do if you think that gamifying something is the way to make it "better." // more
"Stay hungry, stay foolish and do what you love." - Steve Jobs 1955 - 2011.
Steve Jobs was my personal Peter Pan. What I will remember most about him was his boyish charm during his keynotes every year. He seemed genuinely excited about what he was showing us. He was like the kid in grade three who brought his pet frog to show and tell, hiding in a shoebox (with holes cut in it!) He wasn't afraid to lead the Lost Boys (the geeks), and he seemed to have some magic nearby (reality distortion field). // more

So, as a gimmick to attract attention to our booth at the Calgary Expo, we thought we ought to have a technological wonder to draw people in and mesmerize them. We also noticed that people were taking pictures of all the elaborate and amazing costumed attendees that were wandering the space. Then we had an idea! We love our social media tools and realized that we could tweet pictures of these awesome folks using a service called Twitpic! Here is the feed of photos from the show!
Last week I was fortunate to be able to participate in the Banff World Media Festival. This is the same festival as the Banff World Television Festival, but with the merging of NextMedia and BWTF into one event, the organizers decided that it made sense to change the name to reflect the broader range of delegates and their various areas of expertise. // more
The Guru Crew invaded the land of cowboy hats and very large buildings (no, not Texas... our cousin city to the South, Calgary) for the annual Calgary Comic and Entertainment Exposition (or as everyone calls it, the Calgary Expo). We arrived with technological equipment, postcards, pins, and Dubble Bubble!
We were pleased to represent Guru at the Digital Alberta Awards. This year's awards were particularly poignant for us because two of our students were listed as finalists in the "Student Digital Award." The award itself is listed below as "Best in Student Innovation." The event was a hip and classy affair hosted at the Hotel Arts in downtown Calgary. A live funk band provided the soundtrack to a lively networking event that saw the likes of many of Alberta's (primarily Calgary's) digital media production community out in full force to celebrate the best and brightest. // more
