Specialization Case Study - GnarShredder

Digital Illustration student, Jasmine Abbey, recently completed one of her first specialization projects as part of her diploma program. It involed creating a piece of art on a longboard. Check out the action photos of the whole process she followed.

NOTE: The final piece was created using pencil crayons. Yes, what you are looking at is a pencil crayon creation. // more

At Guru, we love to explore all the aspects of a topic. One of the great things about our Digital Illustration program is that our students play with real paint as well as virtual paint. REAL PAINT! There is something powerful when learning to use digital tools that are based on real world concepts by using those real world things.  // more

The Optics of "piracy"

This is a response to a Globe and Mail article about the most downloaded movies.

Sometimes I have to wonder if the purpose of a newspaper is to enlighten or dull the minds of its readers. // more

Why gamification misses the point.

I recently read an interesting article that did what gamer designers do so well. It modeled, with great hilarity, the wost attributes of gamification sins. You can check it out for yourself.

What I like most about this article is that it does not once blast any vitriole at gamification, but rather it parodies gamification and teaches you what not to do if you think that gamifying something is the way to make it "better." // more

Thanks Steve!

"Stay hungry, stay foolish and do what you love." - Steve Jobs 1955 - 2011.

Steve Jobs was my personal Peter Pan. What I will remember most about him was his boyish charm during his keynotes every year. He seemed genuinely excited about what he was showing us. He was like the kid in grade three who brought his pet frog to show and tell, hiding in a shoebox (with holes cut in it!) He wasn't afraid to lead the Lost Boys (the geeks), and he seemed to have some magic nearby (reality distortion field).  // more

Twitpic + Calgary Expo Costumes = Awesome Sauce

So, as a gimmick to attract attention to our booth at the Calgary Expo, we thought we ought to have a technological wonder to draw people in and mesmerize them. We also noticed that people were taking pictures of all the elaborate and amazing costumed attendees that were wandering the space. Then we had an idea! We love our social media tools and realized that we could tweet pictures of these awesome folks using a service called Twitpic! Here is the feed of photos from the show!
