The Optics of "piracy"

This is a response to a Globe and Mail article about the most downloaded movies.

Sometimes I have to wonder if the purpose of a newspaper is to enlighten or dull the minds of its readers. // more

Why gamification misses the point.

I recently read an interesting article that did what gamer designers do so well. It modeled, with great hilarity, the wost attributes of gamification sins. You can check it out for yourself.

What I like most about this article is that it does not once blast any vitriole at gamification, but rather it parodies gamification and teaches you what not to do if you think that gamifying something is the way to make it "better." // more

Thanks Steve!

"Stay hungry, stay foolish and do what you love." - Steve Jobs 1955 - 2011.

Steve Jobs was my personal Peter Pan. What I will remember most about him was his boyish charm during his keynotes every year. He seemed genuinely excited about what he was showing us. He was like the kid in grade three who brought his pet frog to show and tell, hiding in a shoebox (with holes cut in it!) He wasn't afraid to lead the Lost Boys (the geeks), and he seemed to have some magic nearby (reality distortion field).  // more

Digital Alberta Awards Night

We were pleased to represent Guru at the Digital Alberta Awards. This year's awards were particularly poignant for us because two of our students were listed as finalists in the "Student Digital Award." The award itself is listed below as "Best in Student Innovation." The event was a hip and classy affair hosted at the Hotel Arts in downtown Calgary. A live funk band provided the soundtrack to a lively networking event that saw the likes of many of Alberta's (primarily Calgary's) digital media production community out in full force to celebrate the best and brightest.  // more

Online Tool + Social Media Support = Prezi win!

I have been a fan of prezi.com for a while now and use it when I can to visually support my ideas when I am presenting. I will save my rave about the features of Prezi and why I think it is a great piece of evolution in presentation tools for another post. What I want to share today is an experience I had yesterday with Prezi that made me want to give them +100 utils. // more

Static Motion

I don't often write review blogs, but I was fascinated by a piece I saw performed last night at the Westbury theatre and I am compelled to write about it. I was invited to a production of a piece called "Static Motion" that was a collaboration between Skyward Motion Pictures and Theatre of the New Heart. Created by Jordan Dowler-Coltman and choreographed by Melissa Watt, the piece is multidisciplinary abstract performance art. Performed by a long list of talented dancers supported by young videographers and live theatre tech, the show was rich with energetic and committed talent. // more
